The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), later rebranded as the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP), was a temporary utopia born out of chaos in the summer of 2020 in Seattle, Washington. What began as a protest against systemic injustices quickly became an anarchistic petri dish, fuelled by lofty ideals, lack of structure, and tragic consequences.

Amid the global pandemic and the seismic shockwaves of George Floyd’s death, protests erupted worldwide. In Seattle, demonstrators clashed with police in Capitol Hill, a district known for its progressive ethos. What followed was extraordinary: police abandoned the East Precinct building, and protesters seized a six-block area, declaring it an autonomous zone free from police interference, capitalism, and, ostensibly, societal norms.
The air was thick with revolutionary fervour, banners and graffiti proclaiming, “Abolish the police” and “No justice, no peace”, ACAB (1312) “all cops are bastards“. CHAZ was supposed to be a beacon of a new society, a showcase of what could be achieved without the oppressive hand of state control. Instead, it became a dark parody of itself, led by violent Antifa groups.
Politics and the Mirage of Social Justice

Ultimately, CHAZ wasn’t a revolution but a violent tantrum from the left. It was a pet project for those who wanted the world to bend to their ideology without considering the consequences.
